Pittsboro, NC – At August’s Breakfast Club event at 79 Degrees West, Goldston mayor Johnathan Hensley discussed a variety of pressing issues facing the small North Carolina community, from infrastructure improvements to the future of local businesses. The mayor engaged with the audience, answering questions about everything from the controversial painting over of a local mural to the potential for new recreational facilities. With a focus on community development and quality of life, Mayor Johnathan’s insights highlight both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Goldston.

Community Engagement and Infrastructure

A Year in Review

Under Mayor Jonathan Hensley ‘s leadership, Goldston has seen various changes and developments. During the Q&A session, the mayor emphasized the importance of community engagement and transparency in governance. He encouraged residents to voice their concerns and suggestions, noting that their input is invaluable in shaping the town’s future.

Infrastructure Improvements

One of the most pressing concerns raised during the meeting was the state of local infrastructure. Audience members inquired about the status of the water and sewer systems. Mayor Jonathan reassured attendees that Goldston’s water supply comes from Sanford, and the town has been in discussions with TriRiver to merge its sewer services. He emphasized that Goldston’s systems are relatively new and capable of meeting current demands.

Local Business and Economic Development

Support for Local Entrepreneurs

The mayor addressed questions regarding the future of local businesses, including the controversial painting over of the Charlie Daniels mural. He clarified that the decision was made by the property owner, not the town, and expressed a desire to support local entrepreneurship. “We want to see more businesses in Goldston,” he stated, adding that there are ongoing discussions about developing a live music venue and brewery in the area.

The mayor also addressed the need for more local businesses to serve the community. “We do not currently have a live music venue, but there is a property owner in town who is considering building an amphitheater,” he said, expressing enthusiasm for the potential addition. He also mentioned the possibility of creating a town social district, which would allow residents to purchase alcohol at one venue and carry it to another, a feature already enjoyed in nearby towns like Pittsboro.

Childcare Services

A significant concern for some is the lack of childcare facilities in Goldston. Mayor Jonathan acknowledged this issue, stating that many families currently rely on services in nearby towns. He noted that as the population grows, particularly with new subdivisions being developed, there will be an increasing need for childcare options. “Once we get that population up, we will definitely need those services,” he said.

Community Initiatives and Recreational Facilities

Revitalizing the Park

One of the highlights of Mayor Jonathan’s tenure has been the complete renovation of the town’s playground, which is now ADA compliant and features new amenities such as shaded areas and pickleball courts. The mayor expressed pride in the project, which he views as a centerpiece for the community. “The park was the big goal, and now it’s done and open,” he declared, noting that the playground has become a gathering place for families.

The project, spearheaded by Commissioner Charles Fields, has transformed the playground into a centerpiece of the community. “It’s massive,” the mayor noted, predicting that it would soon be visible from Main Street. The renovations also included new basketball courts and pickleball courts, catering to a variety of recreational interests.

Future Plans for Connectivity

In addition to the playground, the mayor discussed the potential for expanding Wi-Fi access in the park, allowing parents to stay connected while their children play. “We’re kind of in the process of getting fiber,” he said, indicating that the commissioners are considering options to provide high-speed internet to the area.

Future Projects

Looking ahead, the mayor mentioned plans for further revitalization of downtown Goldston. With discussions ongoing about new storefronts and business opportunities, he remains optimistic about the town’s growth. “We need more storefronts,” he said, referring to the old Goldston grocery building, which is currently being remodeled for new business ventures.

Community Culture and Events

Promoting Local Events

During the Q&A session, an audience member mentioned the potential for community events, such as the Walk for Hope, which raises money for mental health awareness. Mayor Jonathan expressed enthusiasm for incorporating local events into the community calendar. “That’d be great,” he replied, highlighting the importance of community spirit and engagement.

Mayor Jonathan’s Q&A session during the breakfast club provided valuable insights into the current state and future direction of Goldston. From infrastructure improvements to the promotion of local businesses and community events, residents are encouraged to remain involved and share their ideas for making the town an even better place to live.
