Crosswalk Crisis Near 15-501 Sparks Community Concern
A recent article by Greg Stafford, published by Gene Galin in the Chatham Journal, highlights safety concerns revolving around the crosswalk near Pittsboro’s social district off 15-501. In recent months, two people have died at the crosswalk, prompting residents of Pittsboro, North Carolina, to call for immediate action.

Implementing New Safety Measures
The town has made strides to increase safety by implementing signage that encourages drivers to slow down and cones marking where the crosswalk starts. They have even planted holly bushes, painted the street and put up a fence near the sidewalk to deter people from crossing in the middle of the road. While the new safety measures are a step in the right direction, these efforts weren't enough to prevent tragedy.

Looking At The State For help
After the loss of another life, town residents decided to take matters into their own hands. Greg Stafford explains that “citizens donated over seven thousand dollars to fund lighting and street markings in the area to improve safety," but the state denied the request.
While the Town of Pittsboro and its residents are doing their best to implement safety measures, they cannot make any structural changes without state approval. Stafford encourages the town to continue its efforts by adopting a disciplinary approach, such as increasing enforcement through tickets for jaywalking and speeding.
